Stop, Look and Listen.
A few years ago, during the Summer Months, and before Covid, we held Quiet Days (Day Retreats) in our Secret Garden. Each Day followed the Benedictine Rule of prayer, teaching, silence and hospitality. Participants were given the opportunity to Stop, Look and Listen. To stop what they normally do during the week – work, shop, gardening. To look at the wonders of God’s creation, and to listen, in the silence, for His voice. That still small voice.
Our Secret Garden has several quiet places to sit – Herb Garden, Summer House, Greenhouse, Garden Room, which was converted into a chapel. But my favourite place is the Rose Arbour at the bottom of the garden. I try to spend a short time there each day, depending on the weather. Occasionally, I imagine Jesus walking down the path towards me. He sits next to me. Sometimes we talk. Most times we sit in silence, just enjoying being together. When we do talk, I often thank him for all that He has given me, especially my family and the garden. Other times I say that I am sorry. Then I remind Him that John and Judy are sick, and they need His help.
“But does He talk to you?” I hear you ask, “What does He say?” He speaks to me in many ways, but I hear Him mainly in the words from the Gospels: “Do not be afraid.” “I am with you always.” “Love one another, as I have loved you.” My peace I give unto you.” “Follow me……”
So, go out into your own Secret Garden, wherever it might be…… Just Stop, and Look, and Listen……
Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. Pour your love into our hearts, and draw us to yourself, and so bring us at last to your heavenly city, where we shall see you face to face. Amen.
