The Wedding at Cana.
Those who are tempted to criticise or caricature reverent devotion to the other of our Lord should recall Christ’s first miracle – the turning of water into wine at Cana – when Jesus acted to spare the embarrassment of his friends.
Mary was confident Jesus would respond decisively and told the servants: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” There was no “I can handle this” or “Leave it to me!” Rather she pointed to her son.
In doing so Mary underlined also the primacy of obedience in the life of Christian discipleship…… Mary points to him and says “Do it” – just as she herself yielded obediently to her understanding of God’s revealed will for her……
If God had a plan for one lowly peasant girl, surely it’s possible that he has a purpose for each of us? We are part of His great plan, too; the everlasting arms are about us all. So it is important to contemplate occasionally whether our present routines represent an accurate reflection of God’s will for us, and if we are fulfilling our true vocation.

Do your little bit of good where you are;
it’s those little bits of good put together,
that overwhelm the world.
Desmond Tutu
Lord, we need water
But it can seem dull and tasteless.
We need the church because
We need each other and you.
But sometimes our Christian life together
Lacks the sparkle and colour of good wine.
We pray, Lord, that the church
May be disturbed by your Spirit,
Bringing challenge and excitement and worship,
New thoughts, new words and new rhythms,
Pushing and pulling us into adventurous life.
Lord Jesus, turn the water of our lives
Into the wine of your kingdom. Amen.
